On Twitter it is vital to have strong control of your various posts. This requires being able to strategise and monitor your content in order to be operating efficiently and effectively on the platform and engage with your followers and subsequently grow your network. There are massive amounts of tools providing these services. Here I present my favourite tools and apps for helping personal users and businesses alike take control of their account from the ability to schedule posts to seeing who recently unfollowed you...

1.  Social Bro - Build Your Community

In my opinion one of the most powerful tools a Twitter user has at their disposal. Uses include a Dashboard of your account where you have a visual overview of your personal community stats, follower stats, following forecasts, influencers and 'my influencers'. The dashboard is also useful for viewing inactive 'people you follow' and inactive followers, which allows you manage your community efficiently. Other tools for engagement include Tweet Analytics, best time to tweet and a visualisations of your interactions. Its also useful for researching the Twitter community in order to find users in your appropriate niche. With sliding filters such as Tweets Per Day, Influence, Followers/Following Ratio and Time Zones you can find your ideal followers and then interact with them. You can then save these searches for future reference.

2.  Buffer - Manage Your Content

A well known tool which allows the user to schedule posts. By putting content into Buffer it enables you to post at optimal times which are well spaced out over the day or week. Furthermore you can add Tweets direclty to your Buffer from the article itself with the extension for your browser.

NB: Buffer can also be used for Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ allowing you to simultaneously post across the various platform.

3.  HootSuite - Dashboard of Your Account

This provides a hub in which you can completely manage your account without actually ever having to go on Twitter itself. The site provides a very simple to use overview of your Home Feed, Mentions, Direct Messages and Sent Tweets. Also provides reports of your account engagement and the ability to schedule posts in bulk. In sum a very good platform to use as a hub for your account.

4.  Unfollowers - Overview of recent Followers/Unfollowers

This is a really really simple tool to very quickly see who has recently unfollowed you and who has followed you. This is important to see if you are remaining influential and relevant with your content. If you are losing a lot of influential followers within your niche in a short period of time you may need to re-think your twitter strategy. Then again if they are not relevant followers it is not that important. Moreover with the app you can view inactive people who you follow and flush them out to keep an up-to-date community.

5.  Tweriod - Find the Optimum Time to Tweet

One of the most important aspects on Twitter is the reach of your Tweets. If you are constantly posting at times when your followers are sleeping then it is unlikely that the reach of your content will be very high. Tweriod provides an analysis of the times you will be able to effectively reach your followers. The platform measures how well your Tweets have performed at different times and when your followers are Tweeting or active. It also allows you to sync this optimum periods with your Buffer schedule.

6.  TweetReach - See the Reach of Individual Tweets

This tool is great for seeing how well your Tweets are engaging with your community. From a content marketing perspective this is a really easy app to use to view and analyse certain metrics. You see estimated accounts reached, exposure through impressions, contributors, and a timeline of conversations.

7.  Twtrland - An Overview of Your Handle Performance

Twtrland visualises your social footprint in order to help you discover new people, understand their impact and find better ways to connect and increase your network.  Moreover objective measurements of your impact and influence on Twitter can be viewed, for instance, Retweets per 100 and how many Tweets per day. You can also see the demographic break down of your community and it highlights your best and recent user content in a visual manner. Finally it provides a way to search for particular users you want to follow.

8.  IFTTT - Task Creator Across a Range of Platforms

IFTTT or 'If This Then That' allows you to automate a large range of tasks. If a trigger event happens for example you create a blog post on Blogger, the resultant action which has been created in a 'recipe' occurs automatically, i.e. post the blog post title and URL on Twitter. If you can’t find an IFFTT task amongst the thousands examples you can set up your own recipe. This is an awesome tool to cut out the process of having to manually market your content across various channels and applications.

9.  Tweepi - Easy Way to Cleanup Your Account

Very simply the app is an easy way to 'flush' those users who are not following you back, reciprocate those you are following you and cleanup the people you are following to provide your Twitter stream becoming crowded. Its main benefit is definitely ease of use.

In summary these listed tools provide various ways to help your Twitter strategy and allow you to manage your time and resources efficiently and to effective use.
